The Columbus school board needs to hear from you
by Phil Martin
As you are undoubtedly aware, on Tuesday, September 5 the Columbus Board of Education voted 5 to 2 not to include Sexual Orientation into its Employment Non-Discrimination Policy.
The vote was a slap in the face to some of the best school teachers and staff members who work in the school district. A couple of the board members displayed a total ignorance of, and indifference to, the issues facing our community. By changing the policy, the board could have helped many people who work in fear of losing their jobs. Instead, they chose to say that it's okay to discriminate against lesbian, gay, and bisexual employees. So what is Stonewall doing now?
These are the two school board members who voted to include sexual orientation in the Columbus Public School Non-Discrimination Policy:
Mary Jo Kirøy, 3100 Midgard, Columbus 43202; 614-263-5663 Business: Handelman and Kilroy, 360 S. Grant Ave., Columbus 43215; 614461-9212

■ Stonewall PAC, with Ohioans Against Discrimination, will be screening, through surveys, all of the candidates for the school board election this year. These endorsements will be made in the October issue of the Stonewall Journal. Support the endorsed candidates-financially, through volunteering, or by telling your friends.
We encourage you to write to the present school board members. This is particularly important if you currently, or formerly, worked in education. Let them know your experiences. Please send a copy to Stonewall so that we can compile a notebook of letters and present them to the board members who are elected in November. Letters// may be sent anonymously.

Bill Moss, 1640 Franklin Ave., Columbus 43205; 614-252-0470
Business: 614-257-0728 Loretta Heard, 1440 Country Club Rd., Columbus 43227; 614-864-8477 Robert W. Teater, 286 W. Weisheimer Rd.,

Please send a copy of your letter(s) to Stonewall Union, P.O. Box 10814 Columbus, Ohio 43201.
If you are, or were, a teacher in the Columbus Public Schools--please call us so that we can record your experiences and share with the new board members one-onone (and anonymously if necessary) to let them hear from you first hand.
After the November elections, Stonewall will hold meetings with each of the new (or re-elected) board members. We want to make these people face us and listen to our issues. It's time for them to stop believing
stereotypes and myths and time to talk to our community directly!
So that is what Stonewall is currently doing. We cannot allow the five members of the board who voted against our community to go on hurting our friends, lovers and family members who work in the school district. As always, we need your help to bring about this necessary change. Thank you for your help.

Location set for October 8 annual dinner
Come out to Dinner! In conjunction with National Coming Out Day (October 11) on October 8, Stonewall Cleveland will hold its fourth annual dinner at Stouffer's Renaissance Hotel at Tower City in Cleveland. We are especially excited this year as our speaker will be Bob Hattoy, a top aide to President Clinton, who is an openly gay, HIV-positive
man.
which are to be held soon in the U.S. House of Representatives. Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich has promised Lou Sheldon, a homophobic right wing radical, that hearings will be held sometime in September. We expect these hearings to be nothing but antilesbian and gay propaganda designed to stop our struggle for equality and freedom.

If you watched the 1992 Democratic convention, Hattoy gave a particularly moving speech about the need for 11 national committment for AIDS research. As the White House Liaison to the Interior Department, Hattoy has extensive

direct contact with the President. President Clinton has named Hattoy to the President's Commission on HIV/AIDS.
The evening will begin at 5:00 p.m. with a reception, followed by dinner at 6:00 p.m. and the featured speaker. Buck Harris will be present to keep things moving along as only Buck can. This year we are planning to have entertainment (to be announced) following the speech, so come prepared to have fun!
The cost for the dinner will remain $50.00 per person, with scholarships available for those who cannot afford the full amount. The invitations have gone out in the mail, but if you haven't received one yet, give us a call at 216-741-9105 for your reservations. Please include your telephone number with your message. The deadline for reservations is October 2, 1995.
'Gay Agenda' hearings soon
It is very important for all members of the lesbian and gay community to contact their federal representative to protest planned hearings on “The Gay Agenda in Education,"

Tom Sawyer of Akron. Rep. Sawyer can be reached at 216-375-5710. Rep. Martin Hoke can be reached at 216-356-2010, Rep. Louis Stokes at 216-522-4900, Rep. Steven LaTourette at 216-352-3939 and Rep. Sherrod Brown at 216-365-5877. If you are not sure who your representative is, or he or she is not listed here, please give us a call at 216-741-9105 and we will get back to you with the answer.

Do you have a question about politics or your rights as a member of the lesbian and gay community? Do you want to know how or where to register to vot or do you need the address of a politician? Have you heard of something going on in Washington, Columbus or your City Hall that you want to know more about? If so, give us a call and we will help you find the answer. One of Stonewall Cleveland's main goals is to help our community find out what is going on in the political world and how we as individuals and as a community can cause our voices to be heard. We may not know the answer right away, but we will not stop until we find the answer to your question. Give us a call at 216-741-9105 and leave a message. We will return the call.
